How to Prepare Celery

The tougher outer stalks are the best to cook with – just pull them off at the base and use a peeler to remove any tough strings.

The inner, more tender stalks are better for eating raw. Snap them off as you need them, then trim the ends and wash.

Is it better to eat Celery Raw or Cooked

People can eat celery raw or cooked. Raw vegetables usually contain more nutrients than cooked ones. Steaming celery for 10 minutes may not affect the antioxidant contents significantly, but boiling celery may do so, according to one study.

How to Store Celery to Keep It Fresh Longer

Crisp and crunchy celery can be a refreshing, healthy snack

But neglect it for too long, and you’ll have dry, limp stalks that aren’t appealing to anyone. Here you’ll learn the best ways to store celery, whether it’s whole or cut. Plus get tips for reviving and giving new life to limp celery.

The Best Way to Store Celery

When it comes to keeping celery fresh, moisture is key. This method for storing whole celery keeps the moisture locked in but allows the ethylene gas (which can lead to spoilage) to escape.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • Whole, uncut celery
  • Aluminium foil

Instructions:

  1. Start by ditching that grocery-store plastic bag the celery came in.
  2. Storing celery in plastic bags will only cause the ethylene gas to be trapped and the moisture to escape, gradually spoiling the celery.
  3. Wrap your whole, uncut celery snuggly in aluminium foil, which provides a stronger barrier for locking in moisture than plastic.
  4. But be sure not to crimp the edges of your foil pack, because you want to allow the natural ethylene gas to escape.
  5. Place the wrapped celery in the crisper drawer of your refrigerator and store for up to four weeks.
  6. Do not wash and/or cut until ready to use.

How To Store Cut Celery

If you’re storing pre-cut celery freshly prepared, you’re going to need to take a different approach to storage. Cutting celery allows some of the moisture to be released, which is why we recommend storing it whole, to begin with.

But we understand that having pre-cut celery on hand for easy snacking is convenient.

So, here’s how to make cut celery freshly prepared last as long as possible.

6 Ways to Use Celery in Your Cooking

Celery is a versatile vegetable that you can use as a base ingredient or seasoning for extra flavor. The next time you purchase a bag of celery at the grocery store, consider using the following methods for cooking the veggie:

Add it to casseroles:

Add thawed or fresh celery fresh prepared directly to the pot when sautéing onions and aromatics to build a flavorful foundation for a chicken casserole or moussaka a popular Greek Dish

Make a mirepoix:

Mirepoix is the aromatic flavour base made by lightly cooking onions, celery, and carrots in butter or oil to coax out the flavours without browning or caramelization.

Pros and home chefs typically strain the vegetables out or remove them from the final dish before the end of the cooking process.

Add it to a stir-fry: Celery is a great addition to stir-fries because it adds a crunchy texture and sweet, aromatic flavor.

Sauté chopped celery with carrots, broccoli, and baby corn in a frying pan until the veggies are slightly golden brown around the edges.

Add in rice or noodles along with your choice of sauce before serving. Learn how to make a vegetable stir fry
